Lions close out regular season with 2-1 win at Midwestern State on Welch's brace

WICHITA FALLS – The Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team scored the match's last two goals in a 2-1 win over Midwestern State University on Wednesday evening in the regular season finale.

The Lions wrap up the season at 3-2-0 overall with nine points in the Lone Star Conference, and will be the third seed in the LSC Tournament. MSU finishes at 1-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play. The conference tournament pairings and bracket will be announced later this evening.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Cora Welch (Plano Senior) scored both goals for the Lions.
- Gracie Spradley (Burleson – Centennial) and Leslie Campuzano (Garland – Lakeview Centennial) had assists.
- Lauren Banning (Pflugerville) made six saves to pick up the win in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs had the early sustained pressure, taking the match's first the shots. Banning made four saves in the first 25 minutes before MSU's Tatum Sharp scored in the 27th minute to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Lions turned up the pressure with MSU on the ball and Madison Zick (Arlington) forced a turnover. Spradley picked up the ball in space and passed to Welch, who hammered the ball off the bottom of the crossbar, tying the match at 1-all in the 32nd minute. A&M-Commerce kept up its shooting but could not put another on goal before the half.

Neither team truly challenged the opposition keeper until late in the match when Hallie McCarroll (Frisco – Centennial) won a long ball and found Campuzano at the top of the box. The senior's through ball to Welch was one-timed to the far post past the MSU goalkeeper, giving the Lions the lead for good in the 81st minute.

The Mustangs threw numbers forward in the final stages to find the equalizer, but Banning made two saves and the Lion defense intercepted nearly every pass to give the Lions a win.
