HOW IT HAPPENED

Shelbi Sheppard (Emory - Rains) had an ace and Maiya Dickie (Huntsville) pounded out two kills in that run. The Lions held a lead at 17-12 before the Patriots went on a four-point surge to cut the lead to 17-16. A kill by Andersen stemmed the tide and the Lions scored four of the last five points to take the first set, 25-20. The Lions had 11 kills in the set, with five players earning multiple kills, led by Gonelli's three.

The second set was neck-and-neck down to the very end of the set. Neither team was able to get a lead of more than two points until the Lions scored eight of 11 to take a 22-18 lead. DBU answered with a five-of-six run to tie the set at 24-all. Gonelli closed out the set for the Lions with a block and a kill for a 26-24 win and a two sets to none advantage. Gonelii had five kills in the set, as the Lions hit .163 in the frame.

The Lions carried that momentum into the third set, going ahead early and never looking back. A&M-Commerce went on a few 3-1 runs, getting out to an eight-point lead at 19-11. After a pair of DBU points, the Lions put the hammer down, scoring six of the next nine points to close out the sweep.
