COMMERCE – The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team downed Southeastern Louisiana, 3-0, at the Field House on Thursday night. With a score of 26-24 in the first set and matching scores of 25-18 in the second and third set, putting the Lions home record at 3-1.
Coming into the match, Southeastern was tied for the SLC lead and had the best RPI in the conference. The win brings the Lions to 8-14 on the season and 4-4 in conference, while SLU drops to 15-5 overall and 5-3 in conference.
S1 | A&M-Commerce took the first point of the set on a kill by
Maddy Rashford (Placentia, Calif.). Southeastern answered with a 4-1 run to take the lead, 5-3. A 4-1 run brought A&M-Commerce to within one. A&M-Commerce went on a 10-3 run to pull ahead 21-17. A block by
Taryn Cast (Peaster) and
Essence Allen (Longview – Tatum) won the set for the Lions, 26-24.
S2 | Celeste Vela (Guadalajara, Mexico) kicked things off for A&M-Commerce with a service ace to take the first point and widened the gap on a 5-1 run to hold the lead, 13-7. Southeastern pulled within two on a 5-1 run to make the score 17-15. The Lions responded with an 8-2 run to take the set, 25-18.
S3 | Rashford started things off for the Lions with a kill to take the first point of the set. The Lions continued to go on a 11-2 run before the Lady Lions pulled within three on a 4-1 run putting the score at 14-11. The Lions secured the, 25-18, match win over Southeastern on a 6-1 run.
Reese Fetty (Farmersville) lead the match with 12 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. Allen and Rashford followed with nine kills each. Vela recorded 32 assists while
Lyric Hebert (Arvada, Colo.) led the way with 18 digs and four service aces.
Kayla Lucas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded three service aces and
Ashley Pennington (Frisco - Liberty) had 10 digs on the night. The Lions fell two service aces short of tying their season high of 12.
A&M-Commerce had just two unforced errors all match as well as only two service errors.
Yasmin Figueiredo (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) had five blocks in the match, while Vela and Cast had five each. As a team, the Lions had 13 blocks.
