Flores, Campuzano aid Lion Soccer's win over UIW

SAN ANTONIO – Goals from Valerie Flores and Ashley Campuzano in a span of two minutes on Friday night at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium gave the Texas A&M University-Commerce a 2-0 win over Incarnate Word and crucial three points in the Southland Conference standings with just two matches left in the regular season.

The win on Friday night snapped a streak of three straight winless matches for the Lions, who improve to 5-4-1 in conference matches and 5-8-2 overall. A&M-Commerce and Houston Christian are tied for fourth place in the standings and the two meet in Houston on Sunday afternoon. UIW is now 3-9-3 overall and 2-6-3 in SLC play.

"Tonight was a great team effort to get the win on the road," said coach Ashley Gordon. "We created many goal scoring opportunities, which we converted early in the game. Our team was solid defensively which led to a well deserved shutout. We can enjoy tonight, but we have more work to do this weekend."

Flores (Irving – MacArthur) headed in a pass from Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) to open up the scoring in the 10th minute. Mindy Shoffit's (Wichita Falls – Rider) long throw in was deflected towards Mitchell, who passed it to Flores.

Just after the match was restarted, the Lions were able to force a shot on goal and cause a corner kick. UIW retained possession via a goal kick, but Mitchell got in the way of the kick and deflected ball landed right on the feet of Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage), who passed it to Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), who scored her second goal of the season.

The Cardinals were held to just three shots on goal and all three were saved by Jen Peters (Allen), who collected her fourth shutout of the season. Two of the three shots on goal came off the feet of Sierra Wannamaker.

Of the 14 shots for the Lions, three came from Christina Hernandez (Denison), with two going on goal. Campuzano, Flores, and Morrison had two shots on goal each as well. Margaret Kofron played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cardinals.
