COMMERCE – On a day when it honored its graduating seniors at the Lion Soccer Field, the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team played to a scoreless tie against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon despite outshooting the SLU, 17-7.
This is the second tie of the season for A&M-Commerce, who is now 4-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in Southland Conference play. Southeastern is 4-4-3 overall and 2-2-2 in SLC play. Following Sunday's matches around the conference, A&M-Commerce is in a tie for third place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, both teams have 13 points. Southeastern has nine points, which puts it into seventh place.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the match, the Lions honored their four graduating seniors
Lauren Banning (Pflugerville),
Jen Peters (Allen),
Lauren Shaw (Livingston – Covenant Prep), and
Naomi Sink (Plano East) with a special senior day ceremony.
A&M-Commerce outshot Southeastern, 9-5 in the first half, but two of the four shots on goal were defensive saves and the other two were saved by Olivia Griffin, who finished the match with five saves.
Christina Hernandez (Denison) and
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) had three shots each in the first half. Peters just faced two shots on goal all match, she saved both. In the second half, A&M-Commerce had the 17-7 edge in shots, but was not able to get a ball through the back of the net. The Lions also had the 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
For Southeastern, Mya Guillory totaled three shots, while only one went on goal. Nicole O'Neill had the other shot on goal for the Lions. On the A&M-Commerce side, Hernandez, Mitchell, and
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep) had three shots each. The Lions had seven shots on goal, five saved by Griffin and two defensive team saves.
