FRISCO – Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball guard
Dyani Robinson has been named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year to highlight a long list of all-conference accolades for the Lions, announced during Wednesday evening's annual LSC awards banquet.
Robinson (Langham Creek) is the first conference Player of the Year for the Lions since Britney Jordan in 2009 and third overall. She was also named first team all-LSC.
Freshman
Laila Lawrence (Lewisville) was selected as the LSC Sixth Woman of the Year, while being named to the All-Freshman team and named a third team all-LSC forward.
DesiRay Kernal (Newton, Kan.) is on the all-LSC second team, while
Chania Wright has been named to third team all-LSC as well.
A&M-Commerce went 24-3 in the regular season and 12-3 in conference games, earning the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament which tips off on Friday. The Lions lead the conference in scoring and rebounding.
Robinson averaged 15.8 points per game this season, scoring in double digits in all but two games. She also averaged 3.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game, being named LSC Offensive Player of the Week twice. She is fourth in the conference in scoring, ninth with a .800 free throw percentage, and 10
th in assists. This is the second year-end award for Robinson, who was named 2020 LSC Freshman of the Year and she has been selected as an all-conference player in all three seasons as a Lion.
Lawrence made an impact for the Lions in her freshman season, averaging 10 points and five rebounds per game. She had one double-double and shot 56.5 percent from the field this season. She is the first LSC Sixth Woman of the Year from A&M-Commerce since the award's inception in 2019-20 and just the second player overall to earn the award.
Kernal shot 51 percent from the field on her way to averaging 11.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. She reached double-digit scoring in all but six games, while recording five double-doubles. An honorable mention All-American last season, Kernal is named all-conference for the second time in her career, after earning first team honors in 2020-21.
Wright has been named to the all-LSC teams in all four of her seasons in the blue and gold. She is the second four-time all-LSC honoree for the Lions in program history, joining Meshell Graham from 1984-88. This season, Wright averaged 11.0 points, 1.8 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game. She scored over 20 points five times and crossed the 1,000 career points mark as well.
The Lions – who are the top-ranked team in the South Central Region entering the final weekend before the selections – take on Cameron in the LSC Tournament Quarterfinals at Noon Friday at the Comerica Center in Frisco.
