LAKE CHARLES, La. – Mya Mitchell scored her third goal in the last two matches to give the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team a 2-1 win over the McNeese Cowgirls on Friday night at the Cowgirl Field to remain undefeated in Southland Conference play.
The Lions have won two in a row and are now 2-4-1 on the season, being unbeaten in the last three matches and are one of three teams that is 2-0 in conference matches. The Cowgirls drop to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference matches.
"Winning on the road is always a challenge," said coach
Ashley Gordon. "To win our first conference road match is very satisfying. We definitely will build upon this experience and use it for the rest of the season."
"We beat a very good opponent tonight who battled to the very end. We were never comfortable in a match that could have gone either way. Our focus shifts to Sunday and we look forward to the challenge of facing Lamar."
After a scoreless first half, where the Lions were held to one shot and the Cowgirls had five, the Lions broke the scoreless tie in the 55
th minute on a goal by Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn), who scored two goals in last week's win over Houston Baptist.

Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), who created a counterattack opportunity for the Lions by dribbling down the field and passed it to Mitchell just outside the box, who cleared it bottom right corner of the goal.
Karalie Morrison (Colleyville Heritage) added the second goal of the night in the 66
th minute on an assist from
Christina Hernandez (Denison). Morrison kicked it in from the left corner of the penalty box over the reach of the McNeese goalkeeper.
The Cowgirls pulled to within one in the 74
th minute on a goal from Salma Elhaimer, assisted by Magalie Dépôt. McNeese had a shot on goal to tie the match in the 83
rd minute that was saved by McKenzie and in the 90
th minute a shot by the Cowgirls went off the crossbar.
The Lions were held to just five shots, but two ended up in the back of the net. Campuzano and Mitchell had two shots each, while Morrison scored on her only shot of the match. The Cowgirls had 12 shots, with six going on goal, and five saved by McKenzie.
There were 23 fouls in the match with five players receiving yellow cards. The Lions had the 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
