Ramirez tallies brace to beat Nicholls, Lions secure top three seeding

COMMERCE – Kaydence Ramirez scored twice on Friday night as the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team got back to its winning ways by securing a 3-0 win over Nicholls at the Lion Soccer Field.
 
With the win, the Lions improve to 6-1-1 in Southland Conference play for 19 points, securing at least a top three finish for the second straight season. Lamar, by beating A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday night, clinched the Southland title. The Lions need to win their remaining two matches and need Lamar to lose to Southeastern next Friday for a share of the SLC crown.
 
Marina Vera (Elko, Nev.) opened the Lion scoring in the 14th minute, kicking it in from the far right corner of the field. It is her first goal as a Lion. MARINA VERA GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
Ramirez (Waxahachie) scored off an assist from Savannah Powell (Arlington – Martin) to make it 2-0 in the 40th minute. She has scored for the sixth match in a row and is the SLC points and goals leader. KAYDENCE RAMIREZ FIRST GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
In the 56th minute, Ramirez notched her second brace of the season by scoring off an assist from Camila Montero (Langham Creek), whose shot was blocked, but Ramirez fired off a missile. KAYDENCE RAMIREZ SECOND GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
Nicholls falls to 1-16 on the season and 0-8 in SLC matches, having lost all three meetings against the Lions over the last two seasons.
 
A&M-Commerce had the 24-8 advantage in shots, 12-4 edge in corners, while Colonels had 11 saves compared to four for the Lions and committed 10 fouls compared to nine for the Lions.
 
Ramirez totaled 10 shots, which are tied for fifth most in program history, while Montero had four. Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) had one save and Sophia Dean (Spring – Grand Oaks) had three.
 
For the Colonels, Lauren Andre had three shots, while Elizabeth Zepeda recorded eight saves.
