Lion Football dropped by Southeastern in season finale

COMMERCE – A 52-14 loss at Ernest Hawkins Field on Saturday afternoon to Southeastern Louisiana ended the 2023 season for the Texas A&M University-Commerce football team.

The Lions finished the season with a record of 1-9 overall and 1-5 in Southland Conference play. The originally scheduled game at Northwestern State on November 18 was canceled after the Demons decided to cancel the rest of their season.
 
Southeastern, who started 0-7 on the season, is now 3-7 overall and 3-3 in SLC play. SLU scored the first 38 points of the game on Saturday, leading 38-0 with 4:17 left in the first half.
 
A&M-Commerce's lone points in the first half came on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Josh Magana (Dinuba, Calif.) to Jerome Buckner (Columbus, Ohio), to cap off a six-play 75-yard drive.
 
Bauer Sharp scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half for Southeastern to make it 52-7 with 7:02 left in the game. Jahrik Jones (Houston – Summer Creek) ended the game at quarterback for A&M-Commerce and rushed in a one-yard touchdown with 23 seconds to go, highlighting an 11-play 70-yard drive for the Lion offense.
 
A&M-Commerce used three quarterbacks in the game with Mirko Martos (South Garland) starting the game, followed by a relief stint from Magana, and Jones ended the game at quarterback. The Lion passers combined 232 passing yards and four interceptions in the game.
 
The Lions had six turnovers in the game.
 
Buckner caught six passes for the Lions, totaling 129 receiving yards. He is the first receiver to go over 100 yards in a game this season.
 
Southeastern outgained A&M-Commerce, 416 to 209, having the ball for nearly 10 more minutes as Southeastern had a 34:37-25:23 time of possession advantage. SLU had 75 plays, while A&M-Commerce totaled 59. For SLU, Harlan Dixon had seven carries for 91 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
 
Both Taylor and Jaheim Lowe (Cedar Hill) picked up 12 tackles each for the Lions. Rodriguez recorded nine tackles, which included one for a loss. This was the first game without a forced turnover this season for the Lions.
 
Mitchell McGarry (Gregory-Portland) averaged 39.8 yards in his six punts, but did have one attempt blocked.
 
This is the first time that A&M-Commerce has had a losing record in back-to-back seasons since 2011-12.
 
The Lions will announce the full 2024 schedule in the coming months.
