COMMERCE – In a game with 11 lead changes, the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team rolled to a 97-86 win over Stonehill on Monday night for the Lions' third win in a row and first non-conference win over a Division I opponent in the Field House.
The Lions have improved their overall record to 3-4, while the Skyhawks are 1-5. Both teams are in the second year of transition into NCAA Division I. Stonehill is a member of the Northeast Conference.
Stonehill scored the first two points of the game on two free throws, but the Lions scored the next 11 for an early nine-point lead. Stonehill answered with a scoring run to trim it to two, but the Lions went up 23-12 at the 12:30 mark of the first half.
The Skyhawks tied the game at 25 and jumped up 31-25 on a 15-0 run. The Lions hit back-to-back threes to tie the game and moved back up 39-34. The Skyhawks closed out the first half leading 45-44.
The Lions extended their lead to 21 on a 10-0 run at the 2:18 mark of the second half. Stonehill brought the game within single digits at 94-86 with 18 seconds left, but the Lions made three of their four free throws to cruise to an 11-point win.
Jerome Brewer Jr. (Camden, N.J.) shot 8 for 12 from the field for 22 points, along with four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) recorded 19 points, three assists, and three steals.
Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.) made five three pointers for a total of 16 points, five rebounds, one assist, and a steal. Off the bench,
Evan Phelps (Duncanville) totaled 19 points, three rebounds, two assists, and a block.
Alonzo Dodd (St. Paul, Minn.) dished out 10 assists to go along with nine rebounds. The 10 assists are the most by a Lion since 2019.
The Lions shot 52.5 percent from the field and made 17 three pointers, while Stonehill shot 60 percent from the field. Tony Felder totaled 24 points, four assists, three rebounds, and two steals for Stonehill.
