LUBBOCK – Meeting the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team in the regular season for the first time, the Texas Tech Red Raiders collected a 73-46 win in their home opener at the United Supermarkets Arena on Wednesday night.
Along with being the home opener, Wednesday was also the season opener for Texas Tech, the 2019 NCAA National Finalist. The Lions started the season against two teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament and are 0-2.
The Red Raiders won the opening tip and scored the first eight points of the night. The Lions were held to just 19 points in the first half, which is their lowest output since 2016-17. Texas Tech had a lead as big as 24 in the first half, shooting 44.4 percent.
The Lions outscored the Red Raiders, 11-10, through the first nine minutes of the second half, with both teams shooting well below 35 percent. In the second half, Texas Tech had the narrow 32-29 advantage in scoring.
Kalen Williams (Augusta, Ga.) scored 11 points for the Lions in the second half and 13 in the game. The Lions were held to just free throw attempt in the game, which they made, while the Red Raiders went 24 for 29 at the line.
For the second straight game,
Jerome Brewer Jr. (Camden, N.J.) scored in double digits, he added 11 points. He led the team with nine rebounds and four blocks as well.
Tommie Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.) added six points, five rebounds, and three blocks. James "Pop" Weathers (Baton Rouge, La.) dished out four assists at the bench.
Pop Isaacs scored 19 for the Red Raiders and Warren Washington grabbed 12 rebounds.
