COMMERCE – Goals from
Hannah Bell and
Hailey Griffin helped the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team secure a 2-2 tie against Oral Roberts in the 2023 season opener on Thursday night at the Lion Soccer Field.
The Lions and the Golden Eagles met for the second straight season. Last season, ORU collected a 4-0 win in Tulsa over A&M-Commerce.
Bell (Duncanville), in her collegiate debut, opened the scoring for the Lions with 36:22 left in the first half, scoring from about 15 yards out. She dribble downed the right side to get space from her defender and kicked a long ball into the net.

The Golden Eagles tied the match in the 14
th minute. Ariana Frezquez kicked in a corner from the far corner, and it was headed in by Jordan Grigsby.
ORU quickly took the lead in the 22
nd minute with a goal from Julia Thasaphong, assisted by Samantha Guzman.
In the 31
st minute, the Lions tied the match on a goal by Griffin (Trophy Club).
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep) took a corner kick that was deflected by a Golden Eagle defender and headed in by Griffin.
HAILEY GRIFFIN GOAL HIGHLIGHT
The Golden Eagles outshot the Lions, 9-3, in the second half, but both times did not get a ball into the back of the net in the second half. ORU scored a goal in the second half, but it was waived offsides.
In the match, Oral Roberts had the 22-14 edge in shots, and 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
For the Lions,
Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England) came off the bench and added three shots. Bell and
Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) added two shots as well.
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) stopped three shots while playing the first half, while
Sophia Dean (Spring – Grand Oaks) stopped two in the second half, her collegiate debut.
For the Golden Eagles, Thasphong led the way with six shots, while Makayla Gonzalez stopped four saves in goal, playing all 90 minutes.
Along with Bell, who started the match, freshmen Dean,
Kristen Sueltz (The Colony),
Becca Windrum (Wylie), and
Sloane Denning (Flower Mound Marcus) also appeared in the match.
Nia Chacon (Rowlett – Sachse),
Camila Montero (Langham Creek),
Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie), and
Marina Vera (Denton – Guyer) made their Lion debuts in the starting lineup, while
Savannah Powell (Arlington – Martin) came off the bench to make her Lion debut.
