COMMERCE – In a match with eight cards and 17 fouls, the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team's
Hannah Bell delivered the match-winning goal in the 2-1 win over Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon at the Lion Soccer Field.
The Lions have won three in a row and improve to 4-5-1 on the season, while remaining a perfect 2-0 in Southland Conference play. The Lady Demons fall to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in SLC play. The two teams are now 2-2 against each other since the Lions joined the SLC.
The three-match winning streak for A&M-Commerce is the longest since the five-match winning streak at the end of last season. The Lions are unbeaten at home through their first four matches, which is the longest stretch they have gone without a home loss to start the season since 2017.
Northwestern State quickly jumped out to a lead, scoring in the 3
rd minute. Taylor Spritzer received a long pass that she shot at the net, but it hit the post. She got in the way of the Lions trying to clear the ball and kicked it in for her fourth goal of the season.

Savannah Powell (Arlington – Martin) received a red card in the 24
th minute, forcing A&M-Commerce to play with one less player for the rest of the match.
In the 26
th minute, Lady Demons' Caroline Hilliard committed a foul in the box, leading to a Lion penalty kick and she was sent off with a red card. Both teams were down to 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Camila Montero (Langham Creek) converted the penalty kick for the Lions and tied the match at one.

The Lions had a 9-3 shot advantage at halftime, but the Lady Demons had the 11-5 advantage in the second half and could not score. The Lions took the lead in the 73
rd minute with a goal from Bell (Duncanville), her fifth of the season, which puts her in a tie for the SLC lead.
Mindy Shoffit (Wichita Falls – Rider) threw a long throw in pass towards
Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England) who headed it towards Bell, and she did the rest.

Spitzer had team-best five shots for the Lady Demons, with Libe Banuelos saving two shots in goal.
The Lions split time in net with
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) playing the first half and she had one save, while
Sophia Dean (Spring – Grand Oaks) had one save in the second half.
Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) had six shots to lead the team, while Bell had three.
