HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana won in three sets on Saturday afternoon to snap the Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team's winning streak via set scores of 25-10, 25-10, 25-19, at the Pride Roofing University Center.
Southeastern has won eight in a row, improving to 14-4 overall and 5-1 in Southland play. The Lady Lions have not dropped a set in their eight-match winning streak. A&M-Commerce falls to 7-11 overall and 4-2 in SLC play.
"We never able to get into the match today," said coach
Joe Morales. "Our ball control was very disappointing and against a team like Southeastern, it can make you or break you. And for this match, it broke us. We were not good today, but have to give credit to Southeastern for a well coached and played match."
The Lady Lions came out hitting .519 in the first set to take the first set, 25-10. A&M-Commerce had a 3-2 lead early in the set, but Southeastern cruised from that point on. Southeastern had just one attacking error in the first set, while A&M-Commerce had six errors compared to seven kills.
SLU continued its dominance in the second half, hitting .583 to win the set, 25-10. The Lady Lions lead 7-1 and never looked back, the closest A&M-Commerce got to was 16-7.
After falling behind 12-4 in the third set, A&M-Commerce won three in a throw to come to within five, but SLU won five of the next six to go back up by nine. A 4-0 run by the Lions brought the set to 17-12. Southeastern closed out the set taking three of the final four points, 25-19.
For A&M-Commerce, both
Reese Fetty (Farmersville) and
Kitana Tuufuli (St. Hedwig – Steele) had four kills each.
Breann Connally (Coolidge – Groesbeck) recorded 10 assists and five digs, while
Jade Smith (Houston – Mayde Creek) had 10 digs.
Rachel Hartmann led SLU with 13 kills, while Gracie Duplechain had 37 assists and recorded a double-double with 10 digs as well. Southeastern, who hit .410 in the match, is now 2-1 against A&M-Commerce since the Lions joined the SLC.
