Early goals propel UTSA over Lion Soccer

SAN ANTONIO – Four first half goals on Thursday night powered the UT San Antonio Roadrunners to a 4-1 win over the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team at the Park West Athletics Complex.
 
UTSA scored its first goal in the third minute and added a penalty kick goal seconds later to jump out a 2-0 lead in the early minutes.
 
Alex Granville scored off an assist from Alissa Stewart in the third minute and Olivia Alvarez added a penalty kick goal, one minute, seven seconds following Stewart's goal.
 
In the 17th minute, Sabrina Hillyer drilled a goal off an assist from Avery Chaney to make it 3-0 and the Lions surrendered an own goal in the 40th minute off a corner kick.
 
A&M-Commerce had just three shots on goal in the first half and added two more in the second half. The Roadrunners had 10 shots in the first half, but were held to five in the second half and only one going on goal.
 
The Lions were awarded an indirect free kick in the 62nd minute and Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) got the Lions on the board with a goal off the indirect free kick. Camila Montero (Langham Creek) added an assist on the goal. KAYDENCE RAMIREZ GOAL HIGHLIGHT
 
The five shots for A&M-Commerce were distributed amongst five players. Ramirez, Hannah Bell (Waxahachie), Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England), Kaitlyn Valaitis (Rowlett – Sachse), and Valerie Flores (Irving – MacArthur) added a shot each.
 
Sophia Dean (Spring – Grand Oaks) played the first half in goal and recorded two saves. Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) made just one save in the second half, but it was an acrobatic one off a free kick.  GILLIAN MCKENZIE SAVE HIGHLIGHT
 
The Roadrunners had 15 shots, with seven landing on goal. Maci Geltmeier, Hillyer, Sophie Morrin, and Jordyn Hyland had two shots each. Jasmine Kessler made one save in net, while playing the entire match.
 
A&M-Commerce has dropped four in a row and drops to 1-5-1 on the season, while UTSA is now 4-2-1 on the season.

The Lions host UTEP on Sunday at 1 p.m. for the final non-conference match of the year.
