EDINBURG – The four-match road swing for the Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team ended with a straight set loss to UTRGV on Saturday afternoon via set scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-19, at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros took five of the first six points of the match and used a late 6-0 run to lead 24-14, taking the first on a bad set by the Lions. In the second set, the Lions led 5-3, but UTRGV scored seven in a row to build a 21-13 lead, and a Nadine Zech kill secured the second set for the Vaqueros.
Despite a 6-4 lead for the Lions in the third set, the Vaqueros went on a 10-1 run and withstood a Lion 5-0 run to close out the match on an attacking error.
Reese Fetty (Farmersville) picked up eight kills for the Lions, while both
Gracie Campbell (Klein Oak) and
Kitana Tuufuli (St. Hedwig – Steele) had six each.
Ellie Baumert (Dodge, Neb.) recorded 26 assists and seven digs, while
Jade Smith (Houston – Mayde Creek) led the team with 15 digs.
UTRGV served 13 aces in the match and hit .275 overall, including 0.500 in the first set.
A&M-Commerce has dropped four in a row and falls to 3-4 in Southland Conference action and 6-13 overall, while UTRGV is 8-8 overall and 4-2 against SLC opponent in its first season in the conference.
