PHOENIX – The Grand Canyon Antelopes defended home court at Global Credit Union Arena with a 110-71 win over the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon.
The Lions fall to 3-5 on the season, falling in both games this weekend at the Talking Stick Resort Thanksgiving Classic hosted by GCU, while the Lopes are 5-2 on the season. The 110 points allowed by the Lions are most this season.
Despite the Lopes scoring the first five points of the game, the Lions scored eight of the next 10 and took an 8-7 lead at the 7:42 mark of the first, the only lead for the Lions in the game, as GCU scored the next 10. The scoring margin was not within one possession at any point the rest of the game.
The Lopes shot 83 percent in the first quarter and 74 percent in the third. In the game, GCU shot 63 percent from the field, 48 percent from deep with 13 made three pointers and 73 percent at the line. The Lions shot 43 percent from the field, 7 for 23 from deep, and 14 for 18 at the line.
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) was the lone Lion to score in double digits. She had 26 points and three steals as well. Both
Jasmine Payne (Birmingham, Ala.) and
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) added nine points each off the bench.
Nyaluak Dak (Lincoln, Neb.) was the team leader in rebounds with five.
Alyssa Durazo-Frescas scored 20 points to lead the Lopes, who had six scorers in double-digits, including four of the five starters. GCU outrebounded the Lions, 38-23.
