COMMERCE – After an early scare, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team went on a 20-5 run in the second quarter to pick up a 75-50 win over UNT Dallas on Monday night on Hunt Regional Healthcare Court inside the Field House to start 1-0 on the season for the sixth straight season.
A&M-Commerce has now started the season with a win in each of the last six seasons, while the Lions and the Trailblazers met for the third straight season and second time in the season opener for both teams.
The Lions led 13-11 after the first quarter, shooting just 25 percent from the field, but held the Trailblazers to shoot 2 for 9 from the field in the second quarter. UNT Dallas did outscore the Lions 21-15 in the fourth quarter.
For the Lions, all but one player that was active, played at least five minutes in the game.
Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) led the team with 18 points and five rebounds, hitting five three-pointers, while
Cora Horvath (Irving – MacArthur) added 12 points, five rebounds, and two steals.
Off the bench,
Jasmine Payne (Birmingham, Ala.) added 10 points.
Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) led the way with 14 rebounds and added nine points as well.
Nyaluak Dak (Lincoln, Neb.) scored nine points in her collegiate debut too .
Monday was the first game as Lions for Hedrich and
Nykesha Sanders (Detroit, Mich.), who both started, while Dak,
Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria),
Hannah Humphrey (Lamar Consolidated),
Trinity Moreland (Charlotte, N.C.), and
J'Unti Franklin (Natchitoches, La.) came off the bench in their Lion debuts.
Eryka Patton scored 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Trailblazers.
