Williams and Lewis power Lions over Privateers

COMMERCE – Kalen Williams scored 26 and Tommie Lewis added 21 in the Texas A&M University-Commerce men's basketball team's 89-83 win over the New Orleans Privateers on the Hunt Regional Healthcare court inside the Field House on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions snap a two-game losing streak to move to 3-8 in Southland Conference play and 9-15 overall, while New Orleans is now 8-16 overall and 3-8 in conference play as well. Both teams are tied for eighth in the conference standings.
 
The lead was throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, with neither side leading by more than four. There was a total of 14 lead changes and six ties in the game. The Privateers took a 27-20 lead at the 5:46 mark of the first half, but the Lions turned it around to lead 34-33 at the 3:09 mark of the first.
 
As part of a 9-0 run, the Lions led by five, but the Privateers tied the game at 38 with 39 seconds left in the first half. Lewis (Vero Beach, Fla.) sinked a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Lions a 41-38 lead at the half.
 
In the first half, the Lions shot 49 percent from the field, while going 7 for 12 from the distance. New Orleans shot 54 percent in the first half.
 
Just like the start of the game, both teams exchanged the lead through the first seven minutes of the second half, until a 5-0 run by A&M-Commerce to lead 64-58 at the 12:25 mark. The Privateers took a 69-68 lead to storm back and had a 73-72 lead with 4:35 left in the game.
 
The Lions scored eight of the next 11 to take an 81-75 lead with 1:54 left. The Privateers hit back-to-back jumpers to come to within two, but a dunk from Kwo Agwa (Calgary, Canada) put the Lions back up by four with 44 seconds left. A&M-Commerce made all its free throws down the stretch to collect the win.
 
Williams (Augusta, Ga.) shot 9 for 15, including two three-pointers, and went 6 for 10 at the line for his 26 points, while also recording four assists. Lewis scored 21 on 6 for 10 shooting and went a perfect 6 for 6 at the line. He also picked up five rebounds and six assists.
 
Agwa posted 17 points and six rebounds, as did VJ Reeves Jr. (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), who went a perfect 5 for 5 from the distance for his 17 points. Alonzo Dodd (St. Paul, Minn.) dished out team-best seven assists.
 
For the Privateers, Carlos Hart scored 21 off the bench, shooting 10 for 15 from the field. Jordan Johnson, who entered the game being ranked seventh in the country in scoring, totaled 18 points.
 
The Lions recorded 18 assists, while shooting 51 percent from the field, 61 percent from the distance, and 73 percent at the line.
