NATCHITOCHES, La. – All five runs on Saturday morning were scored in the sixth as the Northwestern State Lady Demons edged out the Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team, 3-2, at the Lady Demon Diamond.
The loss drops the Lions to 8-43 on the season and 1-20 in Southland play, while the Lady Demons took the series and are now 16-27 overall and 4-14 in conference play. A&M-Commerce has been eliminated from contention of a SLC Tournament bid.
Both teams had combined for eight runners left on base through the first five innings, but the game was scoreless. With an out in the sixth,
Diamond Sefe (Carson, Calif.) earned a 13-pitch walk, and
KK Cosek (Helendale, Calif.) followed with a base hit to center.
Brooke Hilton (Plano East) drove in Sefe with a base hit to center and was pinch run for by
Emma Olsen (Elk Grove, Calif.). After a Lady Demon pitching change,
Darby Hickey (Plano Senior) drew a walk to load the bases.
Following a strikeout,
Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) singled through the right side, to plate Cosek. The Lions left the bases loaded in the inning and seven total in the game.
It did not take long for the Lady Demons to score their first run of the game. Bailie Ragsdale doubled to right center and Tristin Court followed with a double to left center, driving home Ragsdale. A groundout moved Court to third and she scored on an RBI single up the middle by Kennedy Reynolds.
Aly Delafield entered the game as a pinch runner for Reynolds and scored all the way from first on an a double to left center by Ashlyn Walker. NSU scored three on five hits and left two on base.
For the Lions, Cosek went 2 for 3 in the game, while Sophia Livers was 3 for 3 for the Lady Demons.
Maggie Darr was charged with two earned runs in 5.1 innings and got a no decision, while Kenzie Seely got the final five outs of the game, including four strikeouts and got the win. A&M-Commerce's
Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School) was tagged with the loss, allowing all three earned runs in the six and eight hits, one walk, and a strikeout in the game.
