EL PASO – Despite six shots on goal on Thursday night at University Field, the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team fell 1-0 to the UTEP Miners.
The start of the match was delayed due to a thunderstorm as the Miners take the win to move to 1-0-1 on the season, while the Lions are now 1-1. This is the first time the Lions have been shutout since a loss at LSU last season.
The lone goal of the match came in the 22
nd minute for UTEP. Taya Lopez crossed a pass into the box, that was deflected by a Lion defender and landed perfectly for Ana Quintero to clear it in the bottom left of the goal.
The Lions outshot the Miners, 14-10, including 8-3 in the second half. A&M-Commerce landed six shots on goal, which were all saved, while UTEP managed to just have two, with one landing in the back of the net.
Kaydence Ramirez (Waxahachie) recorded five shots on goal, including three on goal, while both
Hannah Bell (Duncanville) and
Ava Watts (Tulsa, Okla.) had two each. In the final minute of the match, the Lions had a free kick from just outside the box with a clear look at goal, but the Miners were able to clear the ball.
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) recorded a save and gave up the goal in the first half, while
Veronica Pacione (Birdville) did not see a shot on goal in the second half. Angelina Amparano recorded five shots in the match for UTEP.
This is the first win for the Miners over the Lions as A&M-Commerce won 3-2 in Commerce last season.

The Lions are right back in action at 7 p.m. mountain time on Saturday at New Mexico State. The Aggies are 2-0-1 on the season with a tie against nationally ranked USC and wins over Oregon and New Mexico.
