Last-minute goal stuns Lion Soccer at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Two second half goals by the New Mexico State Aggies, including one with 85 seconds left in Saturday night's match gave the Aggies a 2-1 win over the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team at the New Mexico State Soccer Athletic Complex.
 
The Lions had the lead going into the half and the match was tied in the 89th minute, until the Aggies scoring the match-winning goal with 85 seconds left in the match.
 
The loss drops A&M-Commerce to 1-2 on the season, while New Mexico State improves to 3-0-1 on the season, having recorded wins over New Mexico and Oregon as well as a tie against nationally ranked USC.

Coach Ashley Gordon said, "we played a very good team who has beaten and tied power five teams this season. I'm proud of our team's performance and our continued fight to the very end."
 
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) opened the scoring for the Lions in the 13th minute. A deflected pass ended up at the foot of Nia Chacon (Rowlett – Sachse), who passed it over to Mitchell as she scored her first goal since the 2022 season.  MYA MITCHELL GOAL HIGHLIGHT 

The Lions were held to just one shot all match, which was kicked into the back of the net by Mitchell. The Aggies tallied six shots, including two on goal, which were both saved by the Lions in the first half.
 
New Mexico State posted seven shots in the second half, and it did not take the Aggies long to tie the match as Meredith Scott scored off an assist off Brooke Schultz in the 52nd minute. A free kick from Schultz was headed in by Scott.
 
The match remained tied until the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute from Schultz. A shot from Loma McNeese was blocked by the Lions, but Schultz took the rebound and sailed a goal through the Lion defense.
 
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) played the full 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves, while Valerie Guha saw just one shot on goal for the Aggies, which was the goal scored by Mitchell. Both Schultz and Shila Rasoul had three shots each in the match.
 
New Mexico State outshot the Lions, 13-1.
