GRAMBLING, La. – Ashley Campuzano and
Camila Montero tallied goals for the Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer team, who played Grambling to a 2-2 tie on Thursday evening at GSU Soccer Complex.
The Tigers scored the first two goals of the match, while the Lions scored the final two, to move to 1-5-2 on the season.
"We played a hard-fought match against a tough and athletic opponent. Our team showed resiliency in coming back to score two goals in difficult and wet field conditions," said coach
Ashley Gordon.
"Mya (Mitchell) had a great turn with the ball and found Ashley (Campuzano), who made a great run from the midfield. Campuzano remained composed in front of the net and tucked it away. Then, Campuzano found Camila (Montero) on the back side for the second goal. Both goals were great finishes in front of the net."
Jayla Gage scored in the ninth minute for Grambling on an assist by Naiya Singleton, while Aria Whitney gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 13
th minute, scoring off an assist from Khori Banks.
Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep) opened the scoring for the Lions in the 30
th minute, scoring an unassisted goal. Mere seconds in the second half, Montero (Langham Creek) tied the match off an assist from Campuzano.
The Lions outshot the Tigers, 15-10, and had the 8-7 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had seven corner kicks each. For the Lions,
Kristen Sueltz (The Colony) tallied five goals, while Gage had team-high four for Grambling.
In goal,
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) picked up five saves for A&M-Commerce, while Madison Taylor-Covey recorded six saves for Grambling.
Gordon concluded, "the strength of our non-conference schedule continues to test and prepare us for conference play."
UP NEXT
The Lions play at No. 15 Oklahoma State on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out non-conference play. The Cowgirls have not allowed a goal in eight matches played this season.
