HOUSTON – The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team was downed in three sets on Thursday night at the Fertitta Center against the Houston Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest AVCA rankings, via set scores of 25-5, 25-14, and 25-22.
The Cougars won the first six points of the set and led 13-1 in the set. The Lions saved off one set point, but fell 25-5, as Houston hit .462 in the first set.
The script was flipped in the second set as the Lions had a 4-2 lead, but the Cougars won the next seven points and put together another 7-0 run in the set to lead by 11, which was the difference at the end of the set, 25-14.
The closest set of the night was the third set on Thursday. Both teams stayed within a point of each other until a 4-0 run put the Lions ahead 14-10 in the set. A&M-Commerce remained ahead at 19-17, but just won three points the rest of the match, as Houston closed it out on a 3-1 run, taking advantage of two attacking errors by the Lions.
Gracie Campbell (Klein Oak) was the team leader with seven kills, while
Ellie Baumert (Dodge, Neb.) had team-high nine assists, and she had team-best eight digs as well.
