HAMMOND, La – Mya Mitchell scored in the 86
th minute to lift the East Texas A&M University soccer team over Southeastern Louisiana by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Strawberry Stadium.
East Texas A&M remains in the thick of the Southland Conference standings with just two matches left in the regular season. The Lions are still mathematically alive to clinch a share of the conference title and need one more point to clinch a berth into the conference tournament.
East Texas A&M is 6-6-4 overall and 3-1-4 in conference play, while Southeastern is 4-7-4 overall and 3-3-2 in SLC action. ET is 3-0-1 over SLU over the last four seasons, including being 2-0 in Hammond.
After a scoreless first 30 minutes of the match, two goals came in a span of three minutes, one from each team.
Alana Lawless-Felarca (Dallas – Richardson) scored aoff an assist from
Judith Nandwa (Mumias, Kenya) on a corner kick to put East Texas A&M in front, but Southeastern's Isabella Fregoso scored via an assist from Aja Nelson just 145 seconds later.
The match-winning goal did not come until the 86
th minute as Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) scored her seventh goal of the season, breaking away to score on an assist from
Nia Chacon (Rowlett – Sachse).
East Texas A&M had the 11-9 advantage in shots with eight shots on goal, to just three from Southeastern.
Makayla Gonzalez (South Grand Prairie) played the first half in goal and did not record a save, while
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) picked up two saves and did not allow a goal in the second half.
