Lions cruise to 3-0 win at HCU

HOUSTON – A total of nine team blocks and 21 kills from Gracie Campbell was all the East Texas A&M University volleyball team needed to cruise to a 3-0 win over the Houston Christian Huskies on Thursday night at the Sharp Gym via set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21.

The Lions won their fourth Southland Conference match away from home this season and are now 7-15 overall and 5-6 in conference play, splitting the season series with the Huskies, who fall to 11-13 overall and 6-5 against SLC opponents.

In the first set, the Huskies took two of the first three points, but then the next four points were won by the Lions, who did not trail from that point in the set, leading by as much as five. After the Huskies saved a set point, Nevaeh Smith (San Antonio – O'Connor) delivered the kill to give the first set to the Lions.

The second set had a similar start as the Huskies led 4-2, but then the next three points went to the Lions. With the Huskies leading 8-7, East Texas A&M went on a 6-0 run, but a 5-0 run followed for the Huskies. The Lions halted the Huskies run and remained ahead for the rest of the set, closing it out on a kill by Campbell (Klein Oak).

The Lions jumped ahead 2-0 in the third set and despite the Huskies coming back to tie the set, East Texas A&M opened a 19-11 lead on a 7-1 scoring run. HCU, trailing 22-14, rattled off seven points in a row to come within one of the Lions, who served back a 3-0 run to win the match on a Huskie attacking error.

Campbell had 21 kills as well as three blocks and an ace, while Smith totaled six blocks and five kills. Haley Mullaney (Victory Christian Academy) added 22 assists and Jade Washington (Waco – Midway) posted 13 digs, while Rendi Fetty (Farmersville) had 12.
