NATCHITOCHES, La. – Jeremiah Garcia became the second East Texas A&M University cross country student-athlete to earn all-conference honors at the Southland Conference Championships on Friday as the conference meet ended with the Lion men taking seventh and the women finishing 10
th.
Garcia (Northwest Eaton) timed 23;41.52 for 13
th in the eight-kilometer race hosted by Northwestern State on its campus. He helped the Lion men total 192 points, which put them in seventh, with McNeese recording 178 points for sixth. Garcia is the second Lion to earn all-conference honor at the meet in the Division I era, joining former teammate,
Alex Speer.
SFA totaled 20 points to win the meet, behind Nathan Kapel running a time of 22:54.85 to win the individual title. The 20 points are the second lowest team score in Southland history.
On the women's side, the Lumberjacks also won the team title as they totaled a score of 36, while A&M-Corpus Christi had 39 points.
Edith Martinez (Sulphur Springs) had a team-best time of 22:37.86 for 29
th, while
Mareva Heck (Marseille, France) timed 23:33.84 for 51
st, and
Haleigh Risner (Winnsboro) clocked in at 23:51.69 for 58
th.
Rounding out the Lions,
Aamarie Ebarb (Weslaco) timed 24:22.03 for 66
th and
Hannah Stuart (Canyon) had a time of 24:39.71 for 71
st. The Islanders' Elizabeth Khatevi won the six-kilometer race with a time of 19:44.49.
For the Lion men behind Garcia,
Josh Shanahan (Noosaville, Australia) timed 24:10.35 for 26
th,
Yosef Abdulrazeq had a time of 25:10.01 for 52
nd, Naataanii Collins (Edcouch-Elsa) posted a time of 25:44.16 for 66
th, and
Taylor Warrick (Stockdale) timed 25:50.07 for 68
th.
Elsewhere for the Lions,
Noah Fernandez (San Antonio Central Catholic) clocked in at 25:58.34 for 79
th,
Christian James (Rosharon – Manvel) recorded a time of 26:12.05 for 73
rd and
Andrew Crosby (McKinney – Boyd) had a time of 26:50.50 for 83
rd.
POST RACE INTERVIEW
For the first time in the Division I era, the Lions are eligible for NCAA-sponsored postseason events and are slated to take part in the NCAA Regionals in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on November 14.
