Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lion Women's Basketball bested at home by Lamar

COMMERCE – Jordyn Newsome and Jasmine Payne scored in double digits for the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team, who fell 71-57 to the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
 
Lamar used a 12-0 run to take a 12-1 lead in the game and despite the Lions fighting back to tie the game at 23 in the second quarter, Lamar ended the half on a 10-3 run to lead 33-26 at the half.
 
The Cardinals did not trail in the second half, leading by as much as 21 in the game. Lamar has won four straight meetings against the Lions and sit in second place with a record of 12-3 in the Southland Conference and 17-7 overall. East Texas A&M falls to 6-18 overall and 3-12 in conference play.
 
The Lions are in 10th place with five games to play and one game back McNeese and A&M-Corpus Christi, who are tied for the eighth and final spot in the SLC Tournament.
 
Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) led the way with 16 points, while Payne (Montgomery, Ala.) scored 12 points in just 17 minutes. The Lions shot 42.6 percent in the game, while Lamar shot 43.3 percent and had the 44-25 advantage in rebounding.
 
For the Cardinals, Akasha Davis recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Sabria Dean scored 14 and NJ Weems added 13.
