Lions use 17-0 run in second quarter to power over the Cowgirls

LAKE CHARLES, La. – A 17-0 stretch is all that the East Texas A&M University women's basketball needed to pick up a 67-51 win on the road at the McNeese Cowgirls on Thursday evening at the Legacy Center.
 
The Lions snapped an eight-game losing streak with the win over the Cowgirls, improving to 5-16 overall and 2-10 in SLC action. McNeese falls to 8-15 overall and 3-9 against SLC opponents.
 
Over the last three seasons, East Texas A&M is now 7-2 against Division I opponents in the Legacy Center. McNeese has seven home wins over Division I opponents during that stretch.
 
The Cowgirls pulled ahead 6-2 to start the game, but the Lions used an 8-0 run to lead 15-9 in the first quarter. At the 8:37 mark of the second quarter, the Lions led 21-13, but then the Cowgirls went on an 8-0 run to tie the game with 5:22 to play in the half.
 
A three-pointer on the next Lion possession sparked a 14-0 run to end the half for the Lions, who led 35-21 at the half, and scored the first two points of the third quarter to lead by as much as 16 and they did not trail in the rest of the game.
 
McNeese fought back once again to come to within six on a 5-0 run at the 1:33 mark of the third quarter, the Lions' Jordyn Newsome (Irving – MacArthur) hit a three-pointer to end the third quarter with East Texas A&M leading 52-42.
 
The Lions held the Cowgirls to just four points through the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter, building up a 14-point lead in the process. The Lions had a lead as big as 19 in the final minute of the game.
 
Newsome led the Lions with 16 points, followed by 13 points each from Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) and Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria). Cora Horvath and Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) had team-best eight rebounds each as well.
 
On the other end for the Cowgirls, Paris Guillory scored 13, while Tyrielle Williams added 10. The Lions had the 40-38 edge in rebounding and forced 18 turnovers, scoring 19 points off turnovers, while the Cowgirls scored just nine of 13 Lion turnovers.
