Lion Softball drops a pair of games to the Bearkats

COMMERCE – On a gusty Tuesday evening at the John Cain Family Field, the Sam Houston Bearkats took both ends of the mid-week doubleheader over the East Texas A&M University softball team by scores of 3-1 and 12-4, respectively.
 
The games against the Bearkats end the first stretch of non-conference games for the Lions, who are 4-18 on the season. Sam Houston snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 9-12 on the season.
 
Game One: SAM HOUSTON 3, EAST TEXAS A&M 1 
The Bearkats left seven runners on base through the first four innings, including two innings in which they had runners at both second and third to end the inning. The Lions left three runners on base through three innings, but Stephanie Tapia (Yuma, Ariz.) drilled her third home run of the season to right center, scoring the first run of the game. In the top of the fifth, Bella Perez drew a walk to lead off the inning and Brodie Quinlan hit a two-run home run to nearly the same spot as Tapia's to put the Bearkats in front.
 
The Bearkats added another run in the seventh as Bella Perez reached on a fielding error and was pinch run for by Kinsey Hobbs. After a walk, she scored an on an RBI double to center by Jenny Robison. Haleigh Carter went 2 for 3 in the game for SHSU.
 
The Lions had five hits in the game and both starting pitchers went the distance with Abigail Young improving to 2-3 on the season with the complete-game win and she struck out 10. Julia Sanchez (The Kinkaid School) suffered the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs, but struck out eight.
 
Game Two: SAM HOUSTON 12, EAST TEXAS A&M 4
Maddie Cason (Honey Grove) singled to center with an out in the bottom of the first and came around to score on a two-run home run to right center by Tatum Wright (Frisco – Centennial). TATUM WRIGHT HOME RUN HIGHLIGHT
 
Robison tripled to right center to lead off the top of the second and came around to score on a bunt infield single by Kristyn Whitlock, who scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Carter.
 
In the top of the third, Quinlan drew a walk and Robison singled in the infield to put two on with one out. Quinlan stole third and came around to score on a muffed throw by the Lions, while Robison scored on a one-run single to right by Kendall Daniel.

In the fourth, Emmie Miehe (Cameron Park, Calif.) struck out swinging, but reached on a wild pitch on the third strike and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hailey Montemayor (Lubbock – Cooper). Miehe advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Isabella Arzola (Chino, Calif.) and tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch.
 
Elia Hebel homered to right center and Robison scored on an RBI groundout by Allie Saville in the fifth.
 
In the top of the sixth, Hebel drew a bases loaded walk, Robison drew in a run on an RBI groundout, and Whitlock hit a two-run triple to make it 10-4. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice by Quinlan in the seventh for the Bearkats.
 
Whitlock went 3 for 4 in the game and Robison went 2 for 3 for the Bearkats. The top four batters in the Lion order had a hit each in the game.
 
For the Bearkats, Amy Abke got the win, tossing 4.2 innings and struckout 10, while allowing just one run. Maddie Muller (Frisco – Memorial) allowed seven earned runs in 5.1 innings and got the loss.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions begin Southland Conference play this weekend at Southeastern. The doubleheader is set to start at 4 p.m. on Friday and the series finale on Saturday.
