Mitchell's five points help Lion Soccer roll 4-1 over Little Rock in 2025 opener

COMMERCE – Four unanswered goals helped the East Texas A&M University soccer team starts its season with 1-0 record for the second straight year after a 4-1 win at the Lion Soccer Field over Little Rock on Thursday night.

The Lions fell behind 1-0 in the 15th minute but entered halftime with a 2-1 lead and tacked on two more in the second half for the season-opening win.

Last season, the Lions also started the year with a 4-1 win, that one coming at home against Oral Roberts. East Texas A&M has started 1-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

The four goals scored on Thursday night are tied for most goals scored in a match in the Division I era.

The first score of the night came from the Trojan's Maggie Turner in the 15th minute, scoring off an assist from Amaya Arias, who had the first shot, which was blocked, and Turner was there to kick in the rebound.

In the 27th minute, Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) scored her first goal of the young season with a long shot, which was assisted by Hannah Bell (Duncanville) and Reneta Vargas (Coppell). MYA MITCHELL FIRST GOAL HIGHLIGHT

Mitchell tallied her second goal of the night in the 41st minute and it was from the penalty spot. MYA MITCHELL SECOND GOAL HIGHLIGHT

To begin the scoring in the second half, Kristen Sueltz (The Colony) headed in a corner kick from Mitchell and put the Lions ahead 3-1. KRISTEN SUELTZ GOAL HIGHLIGHT

The last goal of the match came in the 67th minute and it was Bell scoring a long goal off assists from Kelsey Lefever (Princeton) and Alana Lawless-Felarca (Dallas – Richardson). HANNAH BELL GOAL HIGHLIGHT

Mitchell totaled five points in the match, with three of her four shots landing on goal. Little Rock did have a 19-12 shot advantage, though only shot was on goal, which was Turner's goal.

Veronica Pacione (Birdville) and Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) played a half each in goal for the Lions.

Thursday marked the Lion debut in the starting lineup for Alyssa Cox (Plano Senior) and Payton Joost (Wylie), while Grace Robertson (Fulshear – Jordan), Malaya Ring (Dana Point, Calif.) and Lefever came off the bench for their first appearances as Lions.
