COMMERCE – A break-away goal from
Hannah Bell with less than 10 minutes left in Thursday night's match gave the East Texas A&M University soccer team a 2-1 win over the Grambling Tigers at the Lion Soccer Field.
The first two goals came in a span of 21 seconds in the first half, while the match-decider did not come until the 81
st minute and it was the match winner for the Lions, who improve to 2-2 on the season, including starting 2-0 at home for the first time since the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.
Grambling falls to 2-2-1 on the season. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in Grambling last season.
The first goal of the match came in the 25
th minute from the penalty spot as the Lions were awarded a penalty kick following a handball called against the Tigers.
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) kicked it in for her third goal of the season.
Just 21 seconds later, the Tigers tied the match with a goal from Alana Aiken, which was assisted by Chloe Bryant, who took a shot, which was saved by the Lions, but Aiken was there to grab the rebound and score.
In the 81
st minute,
Kaylee Humble (Harker Heights) passed it over to
Ashley Campuzano (Dallas – Atlas Prep), who drilled a long pass to Bell (Duncanville), who sailed it past the nets for her second goal of the season and put the Lions in front.
East Texas A&M had 20 shots in the match, including five on goal, while Grambling had 16 shots and seven shots on goal. Both
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) and
Veronica Pacione) played a half in goal, with both recording three saves each. Kaia Bace totaled three saves in 90 minutes for the Tigers.
