COMMERCE – Behind a career-best nine saves from
Veronica Pacione and the fourth goal of the season for
Mya Mitchell, the East Texas A&M moved to 3-0 at the Lion Soccer Field this season with a 1-0 win over Abilene Christian on Sunday night.
Both teams battled inclement weather and tough field conditions throughout the match in the first meeting between the two teams in the Division I era for both programs.
East Texas A&M improves to 3-2 on the season and 3-0 at home, while the Wildcats fall to 3-3 overall. The Lions have started 3-0 at home for the first time since 2017 and the three regular season non-conference wins are the most for the Lions since 2019.
The Lions took the lead in just the fifth minute as
Mya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. A pass from
Kristen Sueltz (The Colony) was kicked towards Mitchell.
MYA MITCHELL GOAL HIGHLIGHT
Mitchell has scored in all three Lion home matches and has either scored or assisted in all but two goals for the Lions this season. Her four goals are the most for her since 2022, when she earned Southland Conference Freshman of the Year honors.
Seconds after the goal from Mitchell, the match was halted due to inclement weather for nearly 30 minutes.
East Texas A&M posted 14 shots in the first half, including five on goal, while only three of the seven shots for the Wildcats landed on goal, which were saved by Pacione (Birdville).
In the second half, the Wildcats recorded 18 shots, while holding the Lions to just five. Pacione saved all six shots on goal to total eight saves, which is a new career high and most for a Lion goalkeeper since teammate
Gillian McKenzie (Mesquite Horn) recording nine saves against North Texas on August 30, 2024.
