Hot shooting from deep helps Lions win over A&M-Corpus Christi

COMMERCE – Behind 12 three-pointers, the East Texas A&M University women's basketball team downed the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders by a score of 65-60 on Thursday afternoon at the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House.
 
The Lions made 12 shots from deep and went 11 for 12 to pick up their first ever win over the Islanders, having won four of their last five overall. East Texas A&M improves to 7-6 on the season and 3-3 in Southland Conference play, while the Islanders fall to 2-11 overall and 1-5 against Southland opponents.
 
In the first quarter, the Lions trailed 9-4 at the 4:47 mark but then went on a 12-1 run to take a 16-10 lead at the end of the first. The Lions scored the first three points of the second as 15 points in a row came via five shots from deep. The lead did not exchange hands from that point of the game.
 
Trailing 34-24 with 1:02 left in the second, the Islanders scored the final five points of the second quarter and then hit a three-pointer on their first possession of the second half to trim the deficit down to two. A 9-0 run into the fourth quarter extended the Lion lead to 54-41 with 8:04 left in the game, their largest of the game.
 
The Islanders shot 12 for 23 at the line in the game. The Lions had the 35-32 edge in rebounding with Alva Hedrich (Muecke, Germany) grabbing 15 boards off the bench.
 
Cora Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) scored team-best 21 points, going 5 for 12 from deep, while Reza Po (San Bruno, Calif.) added 13 points. Nina Horvath (Oberwart, Austria) scored 11 with five rebounds.
 
For the Islanders, Torie Sevier scored 22 points to lead the team, and 16 points came off the bench from Chelsea Wooten.
