COMMERCE – The East Texas A&M University volleyball team lost its match to Southeastern Louisiana in three sets on Saturday on the Hunt Regional Healthcare Court in the Field House. East Texas A&M dropped the opening set 25-23 before being held to 15 and 19 points in the final two sets.
The loss drops East Texas A&M to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in Southland play. Southeastern is 6-11 overall and 3-1 in Southland play.
ET traded points early and went in front 5-4 on a kill from
Sediong Scott (Elsik), but Southeastern worked ahead 13-8. After SLU went up 14-9, East Texas A&M scored three straight, including a block by Scott and
Haley Mullaney (Decatur), and later pulled within 19-18 on an ace from
Katelyn Pritchard (McAllen).
A kill from
Sabine Wenzel (Melrose, Mass.) and an ace by
Rendi Fetty (Farmersville) tied the set at 20-20, and the Lions erased a 23-21 deficit with blocks involving Mullaney, Scott and
Ariana Brown (Conroe) to tie it again at 23-23, but Southeastern won the next two points and took the set.
Gracie Campbell (Klein Oak) opened the second set with a kill for East Texas A&M, but Southeastern answered with four straight points, to move ahead 4-1. ET pulled within 7-6 after a Campbell kill and consecutive Brown kills, but SLU pushed the margin back out to 13-7. East Texas A&M later cut the set to 18-14 on a block by Mullaney and Wenzel and a Mullaney kill from Fetty. Southeastern took seven of the final eight points, to win the set 25-15.
East Texas A&M started the third set with kills from
Samantha Mosley (Atlanta), Mullaney and Wenzel to build a 5-3 edge, and later kills by Brown and Mullaney kept the home side in front at 9-7. Southeastern answered with four straight points, to move ahead 11-9 and stretched out the margin to 15-11 and later 20-16. ET pulled within 22-19 on back-to-back kills by Campbell and Wenzel, but Kyra McKelvey delivered the final three kills for Southeastern to close the set 25-19.
Campbell finished with 10 kills while hitting .286. Washington (Waco – Midway) collected 19 digs and added four assists. Mullaney recorded 15 assists, nine digs and four blocks. Scott tallied six blocks.
