Nandwa Leads Lion Soccer to 3-0 Triumph Against UTRGV

EDINBURG – Playing its final regular season road match, the East Texas A&M University soccer team defeated UT Rio Grande Valley 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Soccer & Track and Field Complex.

The Lions put seven of their 16 shots on goal and limited UTRGV to two shots on frame. The win keeps East Texas A&M alive for a berth into the Southland Conference tournament with just one match left.

East Texas A&M won over UTRGV for the second straight season and is now 4-7-6 overall and 3-3-3 in Southland Conference play, while UTRGV is 4-11-2 overall and 0-7-2 against Southland opponents. The Lions are tied with Nicholls for the final spot into the conference tournament with 12 points each and ET defeated the Colonels 1-0 in Thibodaux earlier this season.

A win against SFA at home on Thursday night or a tie paired with a Nicholls loss or a tie punches East Texas A&M's ticket into the postseason.

The Lions opened the scoring in the first half when Judith Nandwa (Mumias, Kenya) scored in the 33rd minute off an assist from Lornah Wasike (Nairobi, Kenya) for a 1-0 lead. The Lions kept pressure on UTRGV with eight corner kicks in the half, including three after the goal, and Emmy Finlinson (Eagle Mountain, Utah) made a save late in the half to help the visitors take the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Allyson Reed (Cleburne) scored 15 seconds into the second half off an assist from Phoebe Wilson (Freeport, Grand Bahamas) assist, and Kristen Sueltz (The Colony) followed at 47:06 from Addisen Ramirez (Waxahachie) to push the Lions' lead to 3-0.

The Lions kept creating chances from there in the final 10 minutes. Finlinson made a save in the closing seconds as the Lions finished off the 3-0 win.

Nandwa scored the first goal and was credited with the match-winner, putting her lone shot on frame. Reed scored and led the Lions with four shots, including two on goal. Sueltz added a goal on three shots. Finlinson recorded a shutout in goal, making two saves over 90 minutes.
