Wright, Wilcox go back-to-back but Lions fall in series finale

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Despite back-to-back home runs from Tatum Wright and Aaliyah Wilcox, the East Texas A&M University softball team fell 15-2 to the Northwestern State Demons on Saturday afternoon at the Demon Diamond.
 
JT Smith came around to score on a double steal in the bottom of the first and then an RBI single from Brynn Daniel brought Makynlie Jones home to score. In the second, Jones hit a bases-clearing three-run double, while Aly Delafield drew a bases loaded walk.
 
A one-run single from McKenna Rinewalt and an RBI groundout by Daniel added two more runs for the Demons in the third.
 
Wright (Frisco – Centennial) and Wilcox (Covington, Ga.) went back-to-back in the fourth as Wright tallied her 10th home run of the season and it was the first home run of the season for Wilcox.
 
Seven runs came around to score in the bottom of the inning for the Demons. DJ Lynch hit an RBI double, Jones drew a walk with the bases loaded, Daniel hit a grand slam to left, and Lynch batted around and drew another bases-loaded walk.
 
Layni Kimura (Westminster, Calif.) allowed six earned runs in 1.1 innings to get the loss in the circle for the Lions, while Mattison Buster got the win for the Demons, surrendering two earned runs in five innings.
 
The loss drops the Lions to 6-31 overall and 1-11 in Southland Conference action, having lost seven in a row. This weekend's sweep improved the Demons' record over the Lions to 7-5 over the last four seasons. Northwestern State is now 17-18 this season and 7-5 in conference action.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions head to Nicholls next week. Thursday's doubleheader is set to begin at 4 p.m. in Thibodaux.
