Andy Schmitt joined the A&M-Commerce men's basketball staff in July of 2015.
During the 2016-17 season, the Lions finished with a record of 19-11 and advanced to the second round of the LSC Tournament, losing to eventual champion UT Permian Basin. The Lions would go on to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history. Malik Albert was named First Team All-LSC and Trey Seymore was a Third Team All-LSC selection.
In 2015-16, the Lions posted a 17-11 record and knocked off five top 25 opponents, including road victories against three top ten squads from Angelo, Midwestern, and Tarleton. The Lions also set the single game scoring record when they scored 132 points in their route of Huston-Tillotson on November 18.Â
As the program’s director of academics, Schmitt saw A&M - Commerce to its best overall academic year in the classroom under Coach Walker’s 16 year tenure as head coach. The Lions finished the 2015-16 year with a 2.93 overall team GPA, placing them second in the Lone Star Conference, just .07 points behind the first place finisher.Â
Prior to his arrival at A&M - Commerce, Schmitt served as a graduate assistant coach and director of basketball operations for Austin Peay State University. Schmitt was part of a staff that improved the Governors’ 2013-14 win total by four from the previous season. He coordinated the Governors’ team travel and film exchange, prepared scouting reports and monitored student-athletes’ academic progress.
During his three year stint as a student assistant at the University of Illinois, the Fighting Illini posted a 60-42 record that included two trips to the NCAA Tournament (2011, 2013) as well as winning the Maui invitational in 2013. His primary responsibilities included scout team, officiating team practices, assisting with on campus visits and individual workouts.Â
In 2013, Schmitt was selected to work at numerous summer camps across the country including Florida, Syracuse, Xavier, SMU, Purdue, UNCC, and Ohio.Â
A native of Quincy, Ill., Schmitt earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication in 2013 from Illinois. He also earned his master’s degree in Health and Human Performance with honors from Austin Peay in 2014.
Schmitt and his wife Jen welcomed their first child to their family in the fall of 2016.
