Matthew Scott joined the Lion men's basketball program as an assistant coach prior to the 2024-25 season.
He spent the previous two years at Trinity Valley Community College, winning two NJCAA Region 14 tournaments and appearing in the national tournament both seasons. He also coach All-American Amamad Bynum at TVCC.
Scott arrived at TVCC following a stint as an assistant coach at Ranger College, where he played a pivotal role in the team’s remarkable 22-4 record and semifinal appearance in the NJCAA tournament in 2021. During his tenure, the team also claimed the Region V championship.
His mentorship helped players like Trey Tennyson and Jorell Saterfield excel in their Division I careers, with Saterfield currently playing professionally.
Before joining Ranger College, Scott gained invaluable experience in the NBA as a Player Development Intern with the Dallas Mavericks, working closely with Head Player Development Coach God Shammgod and Assistant Coach Mike Procopio. During his time with the Mavericks, he had the opportunity to work with notable players such as Andrew Bogut, Dwight Powell, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Jameel Warney. Additionally, Scott assisted Vice President Michael Finley with pre-draft preparation and the Summer League, further enhancing his expertise in player development.
Scott’s coaching career is built on a strong foundation, having earned a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Midwestern State University in 2016. During his time at MSU, he contributed significantly to the team’s success, helping secure three Lone Star Conference championships and advancing to the NCAA Division II postseason tournament in each of his seasons. As the lead recruiter, Scott signed All-League player Jordan Stevens, and freshman of the year Logan Hicks and was integral in the skill development and individual instruction of the team’s forwards. He also assisted with game day operations.
Scott's playing career includes a standout collegiate stint at Central Methodist University, where he played a key role in the Eagles’ first-ever 13-0 start, a Heart of America Conference championship, and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NAIA tournament in 2009. He was named the team’s Most Improved Player that year and helped the Eagles reach two NAIA national tournament appearances under the guidance of Missouri Sports Hall of Fame coach Jeff Sherman.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Physical Education from Central Methodist University in 2010. Scott resides in Dallas with his wife, Janaela, and their two daughters, Mattea and McKenna.
