Well, the old East Texas Lions roared over at Arlington Friday. Coach Jernigin's Bacon procurers were hustled out of bed at 2 a.m. Friday and after an hour and a half wait at the Union station in this metropolis, they boarded "The Brush Cat Special". As we boarded the train it was noticed that Billy Crunk was carrying a rope. What is the big idea? he was asked. "I am going to tie Red Thomason on this train because in Izard county where Red hails from there are no trains and he might jump off when it starts." Red gazed wildly about like a cat in a strange barn, but he didn't make any effort to effect his escape.
We arrived in Dallas at 7:55 and after standing on a street corner for an hour we boarded the Interurban for Arlington. While standing on said street corner we read signs and counted electric lights. DeFord and Hart fell victims before the gum chewing jaws and the ear splitting smiles of two peroxide blondes.
Upon our arrival at Arlington we were met by a man and a weather beaten Flivver who announced that they were from Grubbs. Our grips got a ride to the College but our legs took a four mile walk. After a diligent search we located our destination.Â
Jernigin decreed that the squad retire at once, and believe me the boys needed no second invitation to do so. At 12:00 "M" the bugle announced mess call. We were ushered into the dining hall and given a square mel, which by the way was much needed. From the looks of some hands that I saw at the table I immediately came to the conclusion that the neighboring vicinity was blessed with plenty of pecan trees. Get me?
At 2:30 the boys put on their uniforms and marched four more miles to the foot ball field. Now for the game.
E.T. won the toss and chose to defend the west goal. In the first quarter E.T. made six first downs and Grubbs made two. About the middle of the quarter E.T. was penalized fifteen yards for clipping. Green dropped a pass that would have been good for fifteen yards. Brownrigg made a nice end run for twelve yards. Just at the close of the quarter Holly made the prettiest run of the yearr. The ball was on Grubbs' forty-one yard line, Holly ran around right end and after eluding four men he ran to within two yards of Grubbs' goal before being downed.
In the second quarter Grubbs defended the west goal. WIth the ball on Grubbs two yard line Holly carried it over by a buck over right tackle. Green kicked goal. Score 7 to 0. Shortly after the touchdown E.T. made a safety for two points, Blevins recovering the ball for E.T. In this quarter Grubbs made two first downs and E.T. four. The half ended with the ball on Grubbs twelve yard line.
The third quarter was characterized by extensive punting and passing by both teams. Breckenridge replaced Green at quarter. DeFord caught a pass the netted twenty-two Grubbs and E.T. followed suit. E Holly crossed Grubb's goal line for the second time but the umpire caled him back on account of offside.
In the fourth quarter forward passes were used almost entirely by Grubbs and E.T. folowed suit. E.T. was penalized three times in this quarter. Grubbs completed two passes, one for thirty yards and the ther for twelve. The terrific tacklings of Zinnicker, Moran and Fite was the outstanding feature of this quarter. The game eneded with the ball on the E.T. twelve yard lne.
