Thursday afternoon at the City Park the East Texas State Normal College football team played for the last time this season. For football fans Thanksgiving always brings gloom because then the old grid warriors roll up the old uniform, store it in moth balls and call it "a season." After all is said pro and con, this year's season has ended fairly well for East Texas Normal despite the fact that the team won only three games, tied one and lost four.
The last opponent was the Sam Houston Normal of Huntsville. This team hit town rated as one of the best Normal schools in Texas but from the way they played Thursday it seems like they were highly overrated. True they outplayed the Normalites in the first quarter, but after that period they never displayed anything but a highly successful "triple pass" which enabled them to win by the "lone marker". This was about the niftiest thing ever seen in the passing line. The quarter back received the ball directly behind center, then passed it to the fullback who had run wide down the line of scrimmage, the full back whipped the ball to the right end who was standing about 10 yards in front of the goal line. The first quarter was characterized chiefly by punting. It was apparent from the beginning of the game that Huntsville was laboring under a sever handicap by reason of the forced used of a substitute quarterback. Notwithstanding this, Huntsville swept through East Texas line for long and repeated gains in the first half. In the first quarter a series of fumble coupled with a pair of penalties wrought havoc for Huntsville. East Texas worked the ball to Huntsville 20 yard line where Acker attempted a drop kick that fell 2 feet short. The half ended nothing to nothing. Both team suffered numerous injuries in the third quarter as a consequence of terrific tackling. In this quarter DeFord caught a 20 yards pass placing the ball on the Huntsville 18 yard line. With the ball on the 18 yard line Acker again attempted a field goal which also failed. By the use of straight football East Texas carried the ball to Huntsville 4 yard line. WIth the ball on the 4 yard line first down goal to goal, four unsuccessful attempts were made to put it across. This failure was due solely to the lack of generalship on the part of East Texas quarterback. The Huntsville centerpass the ball at leas three feet over the fullback's head but despite this the fullback exhibited wonderful skill in catching the ball and punted safely out of danger.
In the fourth quarter forward passing was used extensively by both sides with poor results. However, the Bearcats again completed their famous triple pass which netted them twenty yards. The game endedd with the ball on E.T.S.N.C.'s forty yard line in the possession of Huntsville. Score 7 to 0 Huntsville.
