Lions Tie Conference By Roaring Over SHS 20-13

Coach Bob Berry's East Texas State Lions clinshed at least a tie for the Lone Star Conference championship by downing the San Houston Bearkats 20 to 13 before a thrill-chilled homecoming crowd in Huntsville. Climaxing a drive that began on the Lion 16 yard stripe in the first period, Engle passed to Joe Murphy, who carried the ball across for the first Lion score. Harrell Shaver booted the extra point, making it 7 to 0, with 10 minutes playing time remaining in the first half. The Bearkats made their first score only five minutes after the Lion counter. The ball was taken over by Bearkat Falk and then booted over by Jack Kyle to tie the game 7-7. Early in the third quarter, the Bearkats scored again to put them out front 13-7. The Lions scored again in the third period and pulled one point ahead when Shaver came in to boot the extra point. Roaring back after only four minutes after taking the one point lead, David Hurst passed to James Boucher, who took the ball over for another score. Shaver's placement was wide, his only miss of the afternoon, and the score remained 20-13, which tied the Lone Star Conference Championship.
