Lions Win Conference Title With 13-6 Win Over SWT

The East Texas State Lions annexed the 1949 Lone Star Conference football crown by stopping the Southwest Texas Bobcats at the San Marcos homecoming game. The San Marcos score came in the second quarter when James recovered Eddie LaCamp's fumble on the E. T. 47 yard line and Mabe hit Swindier with a 23 yard pass. The try for the extra point was not good. In the third period East Texas put on a drive that brought them a score after nine plays. On their ninth play with third and 6 needed Gibson gained the first down, putting the ball on the one yard line. Stewart went right for the score, and the try for extra point was good. Late in the third quarter Clifford Gray snatched a Bobcat pass on East Texas' own 40. The second East Texas score came when Joe Murphy turned on an extra burst of speed to get by the safety man and scored untouched. The kick for the extra point was just a little low. After a scoreless fourth quarter, the game ended with a 13-6 defeat for San Marcos and a Lone Star Conference championship for the East Texas Lions.
