SCORING THE FIRST four times they touched the ball, Catfish Smith's lads smothered a spirited, outmanned Southwestern Oklahoma State eleven 65-0. With Bruno Ashley and his wrecking crew holding the Oklahomans to four first downs and a total offense of 95 yards, East Texas rolled up nine touchdowns on the ground and one in the air. The score was 27-0 at the end of the first quarter. Halfback George Riley led the touchdown parade with three counters. The speedy Oil City sophomore opened scoring with a 21-yard jaunt on a pitch-out around left end. Still in the first period Riley circled right end for 18 yards and paydirt. Riley scored his third touchdown on a 54-yard run, the longest scoring play of the game. All-conference halfback Marvin Brown racked up two 6-pointers on dashes of 27 and 19 yards, both around right end. Red Williams, Judd Ramsey, Gene Murty and Elmer Shaw were credited with one counter each, while another came on a pass from Quarterback James Gray to End Tommy McCormack. Lloyd Corder's talented toe accounted for five points after touchdown. This win marked the Lions' eleventh straight victory and carried the crew from Commerce into conference play with an unblemished record. This spot on the Lion calendar had been left open when North Texas State cancelled to sign a larger team. In games of this type, when the Lions showed overwhelming power fans soon forgot that their team was getting a smashing and were glad to have the opportunity to see such a smooth operating outfit play. More than once the games became exhibition contests. Marvin Brown, sensational halfback, helped set Southwestern Oklahoma back 65-0 by making long running gains like the one pictured.
