A TRIO of speedy East Texas backs and a rugged defensive line smothered Southwest Texas 63 to 23, as the Lions sewed up the conference championship for the second time in two years. ET's defensive machine, already tops in the nation, cut down Southwest Texas' backs at a rapid clip while the Lion runners scampered with ease through huge holes opened by an equally strong offensive line. Marvin Brown scampered for three tallies while George Riley and Lloyd Corder struck for two each. Corder also added nine consecutive points after touchdown. More big stuff in the circus was Quarterback James Gray's steady passing as he completed 11 of 15 tries for 325 yards and two scores. Despite the strong ET defense, Pence Dacus lived up to his billing and kept Southwest Texas' confused team together with his passing, ball handling, running and defensive tactics. His efforts fell short, however, as the Lions were not to be stopped. Biggest play of the night was a 60-yard lazy cruise by Marvin Brown through the entire Bobcat team as the 7000 fans enjoyed the smooth artistry of the sensational little back.
