Lions Pick Up Win Number 22 and Fourth in a Row

The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team rallied from a two deficit to defeat host Midwestern State on Thursday night by a 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 16-14 in Wichita Falls, Texas.

A&M-Commerce (22-7, 7-3 LSC) raised its record to a perfect 5-0 when contests reach five sets in the win. The 22 wins are the most since a 23-win season in 2002.

Junior Naomi Mays led three Lions with double digit kills as she had 17 kills as A&M-Commerce hit .123 in the win. Rachel Robertson and Terra Ousley, who had 13 and 12 kills respectively, joined her in double digits. Ousley and Mays proved to be a strong force on the frontline with seven and five block assists, respectively. Senior Perla Faudoa had a double double with 53 assists and 15 digs. Senior Lauren Flynn broke her own single-season record with a team-high 34 digs to give her 667 for the 2009 campaign.

Midwestern State (9-22, 5-5 LSC) was led by Miranda Byrd, who had a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs for a double double in the defeat. Hillary White also had a double double for the Mustangs with 13 kills and 13 digs.

After finding themselves behind two sets, the Lions came out of the intermission to hit .293 in the third set and posted a 25-23 set victory. The Lions found themselves behind 11-4 and managed to rally to tie the score at 19 and 22. Trailing 22-20, A&M-Commerce came out of the time and got four-straight points - three of which came on kills by Mays to take a 24-22 advantage. The Lions picked up the set when they capitalized on an attack error by the Mustangs.

In the fourth set, after the two teams were tied at 8, the Lions scored 10 of the next 12 points to take an 18-10 advantage. A&M-Commerce held on to the lead and went on to even the match at two sets with a 25-17 victory.

In the decisive fifth set, the Lions found themselves behind by a 7-1 margin. The resilient squad worked their way back to score 10 of the next 12 points for a 12-9 advantage. The Mustangs answered and tied the set at 13 and 14. Again, the Lions had an answer as Mays and Ousley recorded back-to-back kills to complete the come-from-behind win and give the Lions a 16-14 win in the final set.

Next, the Lions will travel to Cameron on Saturday at 2 pm in Lawton, Oklahoma.
