The Texas A&M
University-Commerce volleyball team split its two matches on the
final day of the Pittsburg State Classic. The Lions began the day
dropping a 25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 27-25 decision to host Pittsburg
State before bouncing back to defeat Missouri Southern State,
25-22, 25-21, 25-23 in the nightcap.
A&M-Commerce (18-5)
managed to out hit Pittsburg State by a .282 to .183 margin;
however, the host Gorillas had six service aces and six block
assists in the win. The Lions had three players with double-digit
kills including 16 from Naomi Mays and 10 each from Alyssa Oberle
and Rachel Robertson. Perla Faudoa had a double double with 49
assists and 14 digs and Lauren Flynn had a match-high 31 digs in
the defeat.
Pittsburg State (14-6) was
led by Pamela Cartagena and Corrinne Stringer, who had 16 and 15
kills, respectively. Libero Cassie Wilson had 26 digs and a
match-high three service aces.
Against Missouri Southern
State, the Lions bounced back with its 11th win on the
season in straight sets. Junior Naomi Mays paced an
A&M-Commerce attack that hit .171 with 19 kills and a .395
hitting percentage. Freshman Rachel Robertson had three service
aces and the Lions front line had seven total team blocks. Junior
Terra Ousley and senior Amy Addison each had four block
assists.
Ashlee Russell, who had 11
kills, led Missouri Southern State and teammate Amber Heiskell had
two block solos and three block assists in the defeat.
The Lions will next return
to Lone Star Conference play when they travel to Angelo State on
Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 pm and Abilene Christian on Saturday, Oct. 10
at 2 p.m.
