The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball team extended its
winning streak to four in a row with a five-set win 25-23, 25-21,
13-25, 15-25, 15-11 over Tarleton State on Saturday afternoon at
the A&M-Commerce Field House.
A&M-Commerce (8-9, 1-5 LSC) had
three players with double-digit kills in the win, including
sophomore Rachel
Robertson, who led the attack with 16 kills. Senior
Naomi
Mays recorded her third double double of the season
with 10 kills and 10 digs and senior Terra
Ousley (pictured; photo by Jared
Horn) added 10 kills.
Tarleton State (14-7, 2-4 LSC) also
had three players with double-digit kills, including a double
double performance from Rachel Wolf with 14 kills and 16 digs.
Irelis Ilarraza and Flynn Harrell added 11 and 10 kills,
respectively in the loss.
The opening set was tied 12 times,
including at 21 each. With the set, the TexAnns took a brief
two-point lead, 23-21, until the Lions capitalized on a pair of an
attack errors and a Robertson kill to take the opening set. It
marked the ninth time on the season that A&M-Commerce had won
the initial set. For the season, the Lions are 7-2 when the first
set.
The Lions built an early 4-0
advantage in the second set and led until the TexAnns rallied to
tie the set at 20. A&M-Commerce came back with two kills each
by Ousley and Morgan
Moeller and a service ace by Jordan
Neal put the Lions ahead two sets to none.
Tarleton came out of the
intermission and dominated the third and fourth set to even the
match. In the third set, the TexAnns took advantage of eight attack
errors by the Lions for a 25-13 victory and in the fourth set, the
TexAnns had just one attack and won the fourth set by a 25-15
margin.
A&M-Commerce started the fifth
set like it did the second, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage which
prompted a Tarleton timeout. The Lions stretched the margin to 9-3
to prompt another TexAnn timeout.
With the early lead, the Lions
spread the attack along the front line led by its senior Terra
Ousley. The Houston, Texas native delivered on five of her 10 kills
and Robertson added three more to secure the victory.
Next on the schedule is a trip
outside of the Lone Star Conference on Monday, Oct. 11 when they
travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to face Southern Arkansas at 6
p.m.
