Host Northeastern State scored on
four-straight possessions to build a 24-7 lead en route to a 38-7
win over Texas A&M University-Commerce on Saturday afternoon in
Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Northeastern State (3-3, 2-0 LSC
North) quarterback Kenny Davis was 14 of 23 for 212 yards and three
touchdowns in the win. The RiverHawks defense forced three
turnovers and held the Lions to 188 yards of total
offense.
A&M-Commerce (2-4, 1-2 LSC
North) junior Marcus Graham (pictured; photo
by Monica Borja) had 20 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown
in the defeat. Freshman punter Cameron Frosch had
his best day in his young career with seven punts for an average of
46.4 yards per kick. Sophomore linebacker J.T.
Bates had a career-best 10 stops on the afternoon.
Midway through the first quarter,
NSU capitalized on the first of three Lions' turnovers with a
25-yard field goal for an early 3-0 lead. The RiverHawks extended
its advantage to 10-0 on their next drive when Davis connected with
Ben Randle on a 27-yard touchdown pass play.
The Lions came back when Graham
scored his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season from eight
yards out to cut the deficit to 10-7. During the drive, the Lions
converted on a pair of fourth-down plays to extend the drive.
Following a 40-yard kickoff return,
NSU stretched the lead back to 10, 17-7, when Josh Lewis scored on
a 12-yard rush with 10:22 left in the opening half. The RiverHawks
stretched the margin on their next drive to 24-7 when Davis and
Randle completed a six-yard touchdown strike.
Following an A&M-Commerce
turnover, NSU took its first drive of the second half down the
field and went 96 yards and 12 plays for a 13-yard touchdown pass
and catch by Davis to Sean Donohue.
The RiverHawks added its final
score on another long drive in the fourth quarter, going 14 plays
and 74 yards that took a little over six minutes. In the drive, NSU
converted on a pair of fourth-down plays to continue the
series.
Next, the Lions are home for its
next two games, starting with a match up against Tarleton on
Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 pm against Tarleton State. That contest
will air live on TXA-21 and be the first A&M-Commerce live
televised game at Memorial Stadium. As part of the festivities
surrounding the game, the Lions will honor the 1990 football team,
plus it's A&M-Commerce Faculty/Staff Appreciation Game
