The Texas A&M University-Commerce volleyball extended its
record to 3-1 with a pair of wins over Arkansas-Monticello and Fort
Hays State, respectively on Saturday in the final day of the Lion
Volleyball Classic.
A&M-Commerce (3-1) started the day in convincing fashion
with a straight-set win over Fort Hays State. In the win, the Lions
attack dominated the net with a .358 hitting percentage, including
11 kills from freshman Kayla Bond. To coincide with the potent
hitting attack, the Lions had eight service aces to go along with
it. Senior Naomi Mays had one of her best matches of the early
season with nearly a double-double performance including eight
kills and a game-high 13 digs.
Fort Hays State (1-3) had a balanced attack but only hit .045 in
the defeat. Tracie Hileman and Makayla McPhail paced the attack
with eight and six kills, respectively.
In the nightcap, the Lions rallied from a two-set deficit to
defeat Arkansas-Monticello, 22-25, 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 15-4.
First year head coach Craig Case was happy about the win.
"This win was great for two reasons. One it's always
good know you're capable of coming back from two sets down.
Second, it was a team effort."
Sophomore Rachel Robertson had a match-high 16 kills, freshman
Jordan Neal added 41 assists and three Lions – Dakota Crockett (19), Morgan Moeller (14) and Kayla Bond (11) – had
double-digit digs.
With a two-set deficit and a one-point lead, 8-7 in the third,
Moeller stepped up and served seven-straight points for the Lions
that also included three kills by Robertson to put A&M-Commerce
in front 15-7. Six would be as close as UAM would get in the third
set. In the fourth set, A&M-Commerce raced out to a 7-1
advantage and never looked back. With the fifth set, another quick
start by the Lions as they jumped out to a 9-1 advantage on the
strength of two service aces by Kayla Bond and two kills by Terra Ousley. A&M-Commerce took advantage of four attack errors by
the Cotton Blossoms to clinch the fifth set, 15-4 and the
match.
A&M-Commerce is back in action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. when
they host Henderson State at the A&M-Commerce Field House.
